Unraveling AI's Design Revolution 🧵

Stitching the Future One Pixel at a Time

Hi Friends! 👋

Welcome back to JACQUARD and Happy New Year! 🥂🎉

I’ve taken the past month or so to reshape JACQUARD into something even more special. I’ll still be experimenting a bit over the next few editions but I wanted to restructure the newsletter to be more reader-friendly and easier for me to compile. 📰

Here’s what you can expect: more frequent updates, with clear and concise content that’s straight to the point.

I know things have been a bit quiet on the newsletter front lately- but fear not, I have a bunch of exciting editions in the pipeline!

📣 Today’s Theme: Generative AI for Fashion Designers

Designers are increasingly using AI to create ideas for their collections, transforming how we conceptualize fashion design. Today we’ll dive into…

📌 Designers with AI-Generated Collections: Exploring how brands and designers are integrating AI into their fashion lines.

📌 AI Fashion Design Tools: The innovative AI tools that are transforming fashion design.

📌 AI’s Impact on Fashion Design: Discussing how AI might transform fashion design this year and addressing legal considerations around intellectual property and ethical use of AI in creating fashion designs.

📌 Brittany’s Corner: A personal touch where I share my own experience with AI-generated fashion design, cool accounts I’ve discovered, and more!

Revolve’s AI-Generated Collections

Maison Meta hosted their inaugural AI Fashion Week (AIFW) in April 2023 followed by the second AIFW in November 2023. These collections were submitted by AI fashion designers globally and all of the collections were created using generative AI tools like Midjourney. Revolve, a fashion retailer known for its creative marketing (and influencer trips!) launched 3 new collections from the top 3 designers of AIFW Season 1.

Collina Strada’s Innovative Approach

Collina Strada used generative AI to design its Spring/Summer 2024 collection. Hillary Taymour, the brain behind the brand, gave AI a deep dive into the brand’s aesthetic as she trained an AI model on all of Collina Strada’s previous collections. Taymour collaborated with the AI model to create looks for the New York Fashion Week show, marking a milestone as one of the first to use AI in creating physical runway looks.

Xander Zhou brings AI-Generated Fashion to Shanghai

Beijing-based designer Xander Zhou re-emerged from a three-year hiatus and graced the Shanghai Fashion Week runway with a haute couture collection titled “Xhander Zhou & Pro”. The looks were inspired by digital singularity and created using generative AI tools. Zhou’s collection combines fashion and futurism to tell a story about a future where humans, cyborgs, and humanoids all coexist.

AI Tools Redefining Fashion Design 💻 🕶️

This list is far from exhaustive, as there are SO many new AI fashion design tools. This list highlights three tools that I’ve seen most frequently mentioned and that seem to be of high quality. While Midjourney and Stable Diffusion are great for creative images, they can struggle with highly specific requirements. Here are some tools offering more customization and creative freedom for fashion design:

  • The New Black: AI platform that can easily turn concepts into unique fashion designs. You can create realistic designs by uploading sketches and edit clothing details.

  • Resleeve: Allows you to create designs through text prompts, sketches, or a moodboard. You can easily edit your designs or create design variations.

  • CALA: Integrates design, development, production, and logistics with AI tools for a more seamless process from design to production.

AI-generated content is raising complex issues around copyright and creativity, as seen in the recent lawsuit by the New York Times against OpenAI and Microsoft. 📰

In the fashion industry, AI can create designs resembling established brands (e.g. you can prompt Midjourney for a specific style or brand like Chanel), leading to potential legal disputes and calls for clearer regulations.

Ethical Use and Bias in AI Fashion Design

AI-generated models in fashion raise ethical concerns about diversity and body positivity. Leading design schools are developing courses to mitigate biases and promote responsible use of AI in fashion, such as "Designing with AI" by Julienne DeVita at Parsons. 🎓

AI Design Competitions 🎨🖌️

If you’re at all interested in exploring the world of AI design, here are some AI competitions to get your creative juices flowing! I’ve submitted to each of these competitions and they are A BLAST and the discord community is lovely.

AI Fashion Week

AIFW is a competition with AI-generated fashion collections. There are specific guidelines for submissions, including image and video format requirements and a focus on sustainability and diversity. Winners get to create a physical collection in partnership with REVOLVE.

A peek at my AIFW Collection:

Off/Script

Off/Script hosts AI-generated fashion design challenges. They have an app that allows users to create designs using AI, which are then voted on by other creators, and winning designs are turned into actual clothing.

Hive 3

Hive3 is an AI league where creators can participate in different design challenges sponsored by brands. The competitions are almost weekly and winners receive cash prizes and opportunities to collaborate with brands on private projects.

AI DESIGN ACCOUNTS TO FOLLOW ON X 📱👥

Trendy Term- PHYGITAL 🌐🏬

Phygital: a blending of the physical and digital worlds. In fashion, this could look like physical pieces with digital collectible counterparts or virtual try-ons leading to physical purchases. It’s a buzzword that’s gaining traction in the fashion world as boundaries between our digital and physical lives continue to blur, making fashion more immersive and interactive.

Innovative Brand: Finesse 👀📈

Finesse is a forward-thinking startup I’m keeping an eye on. They’re uniquely blending AI and fashion: AI is used to predict and create designs, which are then put up for a vote by the public. This engages consumers directly in the design process and is great for sustainability as they produce clothing in limited quantities based on confirmed demand.
